I’m sure you’ve heard about the eye wateringly high number of gun deaths that have taken place across the US in recent months. And, to be sure, every death is a tragedy in which somebody’s father, brother, sister, mother, uncle, friend, co-worker etc won’t be going home that night. But the reality is that the media deliberately distorts and misrepresents the data when it comes to gun deaths and gun violence generally in the US.
What do I mean by this? Take the number 22,796. According to the Gun Violence Archive, that is the total number of gun deaths for the year 2021, as of July 5th. Again, it’s a high number, and every death is a tragedy; but let’s delve a little deeper into the details to see if we can get a more accurate picture of what’s really going on.
The first thing that jumps out at you when you break these numbers down is that 12,408 of these gun deaths were the result of suicides, and this figure doesn’t include the additional 308 deaths that were the result of murder/suicide pacts. Another way of putting this is the MAJORITY of gun deaths are the result of suicide. The mainstream media use a sleight of hand with this inconvenient truth. They don’t technically lie, but they don’t tell you the whole truth either, because they know that when someone learns that the majority of gun deaths are the result of suicide, they will be less likely to support strict gun control legislation. It’s much scarier to hit people with a large number like 22,796 than it is to explain the nuanced reality.
And that’s just the first deception. If we break these numbers down further we find that 1110 of these killings were the result of accidental shootings, hunting accidents and such. That’s almost 5% of the total. Again, the mainstream media prefer to try and scare us with a much larger number, implying that all gun deaths are the result of premeditated murder. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Only 340 people were killed in mass shootings. I say “only” because the media work overtime trying to convince people that mass shootings account for the largest number of gun deaths in America each year. That simply isn’t true. As noted earlier, deaths by suicide comprise the largest number of gun deaths.
In the wake of a mass shooting in Denver, CO in which 10 people were killed, Vice President Kamala’s niece Meena tweeted “Violent white men are the greatest terrorist threat to our country.” As it turned out, the shooter was a Syrian immigrant of Arab descent, not a white man.
After some blowback, Meena deleted the original tweet, then posted this attempt at justification: “I deleted a previous tweet about the suspect in the Boulder shooting. I made an assumption based on his being taken into custody alive and the fact that the majority of mass shootings in the U.S. are carried out by white men.” This statement is also false. Most mass shootings are not carried out by white men.
695 deaths were the result of police shooting suspects, the overwhelming majority of which were justified– in most cases, the perpetrators were armed. 28 police officers were killed in the line of duty, a statistic which brings joy to radical Left-wing groups like Antifa and BLM. This is why we say Blue Lives Matter.
The most alarming fact about these statistics, however, is that of the 10,398 gun homicides that have occurred so far this year, there is no concrete data separating the homicides committed by lawful gun owners vs homicides committed by criminals who’d obtained their guns illegally. In other words, the media does everything they can to hide the fact the vast majority of gun crimes are committed by people who’ve broken the law to get a gun, not by lawful gun owners.
Stricter gun control measures would put lawful gun owners at a tactical disadvantage against dangerous criminals who have no intention of obeying the law anyway.
